It is important that all those affected by the tornados to FIRST register with FEMA before accepting any monetary assistance from any other organization or they may be ineligible for FEMA assistance.

Linda Colon, FEMA Community Relations Manager, says they are now in the field working face to face with clients.

Clients are to call the FEMA registration number, 1-800-621-FEMA(3362).

They will need to know:

  • their social security number,
  • the address of where the damages occurred and
  • the address of where they are currently staying.
  • Also a reliable contact number is very important.
  • Ms. Colon stated that if a victim has insurance, they should call their insurance company first and then register with FEMA.
  • The client needs to be sure to write down their FEMA registration number and once they get their letter from insurance company on what the insurance company can pay for, they will fax that information into FEMA.
  • She also emphasized that most of the first letters clients receive from FEMA will say DENIED.  Clients should not be discouraged but continue reading as FEMA may just need more information from them or they may be eligible for partial assistance.

Frantz Cassagnol, the FEMA VAL for Franklin County, can be reached at (205)258-9297. He will be coordinating the cleanup of areas in Franklin County to set up FEMA trailers. He also encouraged clients to check back in with the DRC’s after they register by phone to make sure all information that FEMA needs has been collected and no problems have come up with their application. Ms. Colon added that many FEMA applicants, will also receive a package from SBA (Small Business Administration) and even if they don’t want the loan, they should go ahead and fill this information out and send it back in because failing to do so can hinder the FEMA application process. Clients can go to the local DRC’s if they need help filling any information out. Also, the DRC in Franklin County will be set up for an indeterminate amount of time. As of right now, FEMA plans to keep the DRC open as long as families are still coming in to register.
